The Value of Friendship

October 10, 2012

Have you ever thought about the friends in your life – those certain individuals that stay in your heart even though you may not see them for days, weeks, or months – even years?

One of these days, just sit down and take a moment to think about them, and be grateful for having them, for knowing them, for loving them and knowing that they love you in return.

Some people will never know the value of that one special person… one who stands by your side when you ache, one who lifts you up when you’re not at your best, one who loves you for the person you are without judgment, without pause, without compensation.

They are who they are and they are beautiful to you.

My great aunt once sent me a birthday card that read : “Do you love me because I’m beautiful  or am I beautiful because you love me?” I got the message right away…she loved me and that made me beautiful in her eyes.

Many of us have more than one special friend, and for that, we are definitely blessed. I would ask, as you read my blog, to pick out one or two people in your life that are meaningful to you, someone you feel close to, and if you can’t tell them how important they are to you, simply smile at them or pat them on the shoulder. They’ll get the message, and you will feel better because you made the effort.

The mother of one of my best childhood friends told me about a poem called “Do It Now.” It was her favorite and she could recite it line by line. It soon became a favorite of mine as well. As you read it, look at it with your heart, and realize the importance of these few simple words.

DO IT NOW  —– before it’s too late.

Blessings, Linda

by Berton Braley

If with pleasure you are viewing any work a man is doing,
If you like him or you love him, tell him now;
Don’t withhold your approbation till the parson makes oration
And he lies with snowy lilies on his brow;

No matter how you shout it he won’t really care about it;
He won’t know how many teardrops you have shed;
If you think some praise is due him now’s the time to slip it to him,
For he cannot read his tombstone when he’s dead.

More than fame and more than money is the comment kind and sunny
And the hearty, warm approval of a friend.
For it gives to life a savor, and it makes you stronger, braver,
And it gives you heart and spirit to the end;

If he earns your praise – bestow it; if you like him let him know it;
Let the words of true encouragement be said;
Do not wait till life is over and he’s underneath the clover,
For he cannot read his tombstone when he’s dead.
